Pharmacy Technician

The Pharmacy Technician assists the pharmacist with mixing and packaging prescriptions, maintaining client records, referring clients to the pharmacist for counseling, assisting with inventory control and purchasing, as well as collecting payment and coordinating billing. This course combines 168 hours of classroom instruction with a 120-hour externship to provide students with a complete learning experience. The course fee includes medical equipment, clinical externship and certification of completion. Also required: Current BLS/CPR card. Assessment test administered first class meeting. (OAE-CTC, in collaboration with Boston Reed College, offers this 24-week Pharmacy Technician Training Program. Pre-registration with Boston Reed is required; forms available at OAE office.)

Medical Transcription

Medical Transcription continues to be in high demand and many transciptionists are able to work at home. Course includes dictation practice on transcription machines, prefixes and suffixes, dividing and combining medical terms, listening skills, proper abbreviations and capitalizations, exercises from patient charts to prepare the student for an entry level job in the field of Medical Transcription. Also required: Medical Terminology, 45 WPM Keyboarding, + C&CR.

Medical Assistant/Front and Back Office

Medical Assistants perform administrative and certain clinical duties under the direction of a physician. Clinical duties may include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, and preparing patients for exam. Students will receive front and back office training for an entry-level job in a medical office or clinic. Class is divided into lecture and supervised on-site clinical practice. The following classes are required and may be taken concurrently: Medical Terminology and Business Applications. Also required: Current BLS/CPR card, (Click here for OAE classes) and Keyboarding certificate with a minimum 45 WPM, CASAS final assessment score of 236 and career unit. Medical Secretary
Medical Secretaries must have specific knowledge of medical terminology and hospital, clinic or laboratory procedures. Duties include scheduling appointments, billing patients and compiling and recording medical charts, reports and correspondence. Medical Records Technicians compile, process, and maintain medical records of hospital and clinic patient in a manner consistent with medical, administrative, ethical, legal, and regulatory requirements of the health care system. This profession is becoming increasing important in today’s complex medical field. The CNA program combines classroom and clinical experience to prepare the student for a career in Nurse Assisting. Students successfully completing this course will be prepared to take the State Certification Exam and begin a career in nursing. Also required: Current CPR/BLS card. To receive certificate of completion, CASAS final assessment score of 236 and career unit required. Note: Students must return forms from application packet at least two weeks before class starts to ensure completion of State application requirements.

Daytime class consists of lecture from 8:00am-5:00pm T,Th for the first two weeks. Clinical schedule will then begin. Clinical runs from 6:30am to 2:00pm and meets two times per week; either M,W or T,Th. One of those clinical days will include a lecture following clinical from 3:00-5:00pm.

Home Health Aide (HHA)

Home Health Aide
This class will prepare you for in-home care as a Home Health Aide. Combining lecture and lab, students will learn about taking care of the patient’s needs in the comfort of their own homes. This class combines 85 hours of classroom instruction and 88 hours of supervised clinical training. Also required: Current CPR/BLS card. To receive certificate of completion, CASAS final assessment score of 236 and career unit required. Note: Students must return forms from application packet at least two weeks before class starts to ensure completion of State application requirements.

Home Health Aide for CNAs
This 40.5 hour course is designed as an added course to follow a nurse assistant curriculum that meets federal and state training regulations.  The curriculum covers five elements of instruction that include introduction to the aide and the agency role, interpretation for medical and social needs of the client, personal care services, nutrition, and cleaning and care tasks in the home.  The total theory and clinical hours are required to meet the Department of Health Services approval.  Satisfactory completion of the approved program entitles the student to be issued a Home Health Aide Certificate by DHS. Student must be currently C.N.A. certified by the State of California, have a current CPR/BLS, TB test and have a final CASAS assessment score of 236.  Note:  Students must return forms from application packet at least two weeks before class starts to ensure completion of State application requirements.

CPR/First Aid

CPR/BLS Healthcare Provider/Heartsaver First Aid

Course includes Adult, Infant and Child CPR/Two person CPR/Bag valve mask use/AED. Course is taught using American Heart Association curriculum. Students who successfully pass this BLS (Basic Life Saver) class will receive both BLS/CPR and First Aid cards good for two years. (OAE students needing this class to meet requirements may take the course for material and book fees only.)

The course meets State of California requirements for recertification. The EMT Refresher Course is designed for the working professional to earn continuing education credits (24 credits) and Skills Verification. EMT/Emergency Medical Technician

This intensive course is designed to assist the student in becoming an Emergency Medical Technician by developing skill in recognition of symptoms of illness and injuries and proper procedures in emergency care. Combining lecture and supervised
experience, the course includes patient evaluation and treatment, clinical experience and ambulance operations in the pre-hospital emergency setting. Upon successful completion of the course and passing the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) examination, students may make application through their local Emergency Medical Services Agency for certification. (In the north state the agency is NorCal EMS, Inc.) This is a 144-hour course. Some off-schedule and week-end hours required. Also required: Current BLS/CPR card or Professional Rescue card. Paramedic

The course is a Nationally Accredited Paramedic Training Program meeting the Department of Transportation National Paramedic Curriculum requirements that prepares students for licensure as a Paramedic in the State of California. The program is designed for the working adult wishing to upgrade their skills or make a career change. Classroom is Friday evening and all day Saturday with an open classroom on Friday. Anatomy and Physiology is a co-requisite and the clinical internship is completed concurrently with the class lecture segment. Enrollment requirements: EMT for 12 months, HS diploma or GED.
